And the results.............

All testing was done with a Glock 17.  Phone books were fully soaked for 16 hours.  Altitude was approximately 5200 feet, and temperature was about 50 degrees.

All of the rounds tested are of new manufacture and purchased during the year 2005.  To see the full size picture, click on the pictures below.  Be advised that
the full size pics are almost a megabyte each in size.  I've put a CCI aluminum 115 grain ball round on each side of the picture so there is a sense of scale.

Hydra-Shok 147 grain
Comments:  The hydra's were the worst of the lot.  I fired 3 of them, with one of them not expanding and zapping right through 6 phone books (most rounds stopped in the 3rd or 4th book).  Of the 2 I was able to recover, one of them had fragmented a fair amount.

Winchester White Box 115 grain
Comments:  While the 115 gr WWB expanded nicely, it was the shallowest in terms in terms of penetration.  They barely cleared 3 phone books,
and one of the rounds was starting to come apart.

Winchester White Box 147 grain
Comments:  For such a cheap round ($10 for a box of 50 at Wal Mart), 147 gr WWB expanded nicely and penetrated well.
Definitely the bang for buck winner.

Winchester Ranger T 127 grain +p+
Comments:  These expanded a bit more then the WWB 147's, but not as uniformly.  Still, they did the job and had decent penetration.

I've also included a picture of the bottom so you can see the talons.  Trust me, these things are sharp !
Notice the huge amounts of phone book paper stuck in the talons.

Winchester Ranger T 147 grain
Comments:  These expanded a tiny bit more then the WWB 147's with uniformity.
They also penetrated well, deep into the 4th phone book.

And another bottom pick.  Notice the huge amounts of phone book paper stuck in the talons.

Conclusion:

I felt the Hydra-Shok's did the worst.  They over penetrated and under expanded.  Both the Ranger T rounds did great, and either is a good pick.
And the WWB 147 grain definitely is no slouch, especially considering how cheap it is and the easy availability of the round.
